SafeXtend: Evaluation of Construction Trainees’ Performance

Tue, 28 January, 2025

By visualising potential hazards and outcomes, the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered, virtual reality (VR), construction training environment and platform will help trainees understand risks from their first day on site - a critical need when language barriers exist. The platform’s scalability means that it has the potential to train large numbers of international workers who are currently filling skills shortages in the UK. With its focus on continuous upskilling through scenario-based immersive learning, SafeXtend seeks to help close the looming 300K person skills gap projected to impact the construction sector by 2030.

SafeXtend offers a virtual solution, supporting the efficient mass training required by the construction industry, to recruit and certify both domestic and global talent while meeting the UK’s rigorous health and safety standards.

By conducting assisted conversion of 3D site scans into interactive digital models and generating customised, scenario-based, 13-15 minute training programmes, SafeXtend seeks to address forecast skills shortages through effective upskilling.

Focusing training efforts on areas facing shortages, or critical factors like health and safety, while nurturing future leaders from within the current labour force, will enable companies to simultaneously cultivate in-demand proficiency levels among staff, while planning for forthcoming gaps in institutional knowledge. SafeXtend aims to satisfy these interlinked needs around skills, labour and knowledge transfer.
